Photos: Members of Congress Release Survey Showing Support for Sidewalk, Bike Lane Funding

This morning, America Bikes joined members of Congress, business leaders, and Bike to School Day organizers to release new survey results showing overwhelming support for biking and walking.

Despite a grey forecast, the sun shone on the Capitol building as bike advocates and lawmakers released the survey. A poll by Princeton Survey Research Associates International found that 83% of Americans support maintaining or increasing funds for sidewalks and bikeways.

See below for photographs of this morning's press conference and of a National Bike to School Day celebration a short distance from Capitol Hill.

Representatives Tom Petri (R-WI) and Earl Blumenauer (D-OR). When Andy Clarke, president of the League of American Bicyclists, commented that Representative Petri is a hero for standing up for biking and walking in the House, the Congressman replied, "It doesn't take courage to stand up for something 83 percent of Americans support; it's the other guys who have the courage." (Chris Eichler - America Bikes)

The press conference took place shortly after students and their parents gathered to celebrate the first annual National Bike to School Day. Schoolchildren and parents rode in "bike trains" to nearby public schools just a short distance from Capitol Hill.
