Safe
Routes to School
A Safe Routes to School program will ensure a
safer environment for children who already walk
or bicycle to school, encourage more children to
become physically active, improve traffic safety
around schools, and reduce the cost of the
school trip on both parents and the road
network.

Safe Routes to School Work!
A ccording to a study by the UC Irvine, examining the
effectiveness of the California Safe Routes to Schools program,
children who pass by these improvement projects on their route
to school are three times as likely to walk or bike to school
when the project is completed, compared to classmates who do not
pass such projects. The study is first to evaluate whether
changes to the built environment can increase pedestrian travel
to school and the results will provide great encouragement to
all the people who support this crucial aspect of the America
Bikes agenda. To read the report in full, go to the
